The Asian Food Channel (AFC), which is part of Scripps Networks Interactive, will shine a bright light on the hectic nature of the Malaysian restaurant industry in its newest original production.
On Tuesday, 10 December 2013 at 9.00pm, AFC will premiere a brand new and dramatic reality series called “Reality Bites: Rise Above with Style”, which features best friends and AFC celebrity chefs, Sherson Lian and Johnny Fua. The programme, which is presented by Elegantology Gallery and Restaurant, will air regionally across Asia to AFC viewers in twelve different territories – viewers in Malaysia can catch the AFC Original Production nationwide on Astro Channel 703.
The six-part series (6x30mins) features the dynamic duo as they set off on an exciting adventure – spearheading the newly opened trendy restaurant and gallery, Elegantology Gallery and Restaurant. Backed by a young team, Chef Johnny helms the kitchen while Chef Sherson leads the service staff. With the restaurant and showroom operating in full swing, the two chefs soon find themselves in a web of misaligned expectations and working styles. Having to solve their differences for the success of the business, the programme gives viewers an in depth look into the sheer pressure behind running a successful restaurant and the raw unedited relationship between these two chefs.

Sherson Lian is no stranger to the camera, he has starred in many popular television programmes in Malaysia. He not only hosts Malaysian lifestyle cooking show 5 Rencah 5 Rasa which airs on the AFC he also starred in AFC Original Production, Great Dinners of the World alongside Chef Johnny. Starting off from humble beginnings, he worked in various kitchens before he moved on to become the manager of a restaurant at Old Klang Road. Looking to challenge himself further, Sherson took over ownership of a restaurant named Paradise Corner in Sungai Chua Kajang, and after three years of successful patronage and growth, he sold off the restaurant and moved to Malacca in search for new experiences and challenges. With 12 years of experience in the industry, Sherson now brings his burning passion for Asian aromatics and flavors to Elegantology, interweaving Asian herbs and spices to enhance Western components in his sumptuous inventions.
Johnny Fua too is a veteran in the restaurant industry, starting his culinary journey at as a cook, he quickly moved up the ranks to become a Commis cook and then a Chef de Partie. He then moved on to work at several renowned establishments before taking on the job as Executive Chef at Elegantology Restaurant. Coming from a background in architecture, Chef Johnny incorporates his experience into his dishes by using clean lines when plating. Calm and structured in nature, he concentrates on expanding natural flavors while giving each ingredient its own unique identity.
Elegantology Gallery & Restaurant is a creative space that houses a couture gallery featuring exclusive men’s fashion and lifestyle collections by reputable local designers alongside a gastronomic haven helmed Sherson and Chef Johnny. The restaurant menu is ever evolving, giving the chefs the chance to continuously create new dining experiences for their guests. Regularly collaborating with rising guest chefs in Malaysia as well, the cuisine served at Elegantology can only be described as a creative combination of unique and surprising elements that raise the enjoyment of dining to a new level.
The exclusive media preview launch was held at Publika, following by an exquisite dinner at the Elegantology Gallery & Restaurant to showcase the incredible culinary talent of both Sherson and Johnny.
Elegantology Baker’s Choice
The creative culinary team of Elegantology had prepared the distinguish guests with a 7-course dinner, started with their baker’s choice of three different types. Soft and fluffy, it was nice to nibble with the accompanied Truffle Butter Florets, Paprika Chickpeas Hummus, and Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Ceviche Scallop and Pawpaw Kerabu
We had our Asian inspired starter in nice pleasantly raw, ceviche scallop and pawpaw kerabu, which drizzled in nam pla (fish sauce) influenced ponzu sesame that blended quite well with its own fresh natural taste.
Foie Gras Cube
Interesting creamy texture the foie gras cube had. I were slowly eating it spoon by spoon but still can’t manage to finish it all cos felt too filling. Paired with soy bean milk braised shimeiji mushroom at the side and olive lemon soil as garnishment, this was a delightful east meet west dish.
A flavorsome oxtail broth with brandied sea cucumber. I personally added few spoons of Martell into the broth and it turned out great. Enjoyed my own rendition of oxtail broth with little hint of the fragrant Martell!
Tomato Sake Granita
Love this refreshing granita of tomato sake with shaved sour plum inside, a balanced mix of sweet and sour taste, to clean the palate before entering for the mains.
Kobe Beef Skewer
Paired with miso pineapple béarnaise, this Kobe beef skewer was the star of the night! A remarkably flavorsome with almost melt-in-the-mouth fatty texture, am truly pampered in every bite of it. Simply irresistible!
Barramundi and Smoked Muscovy Duck Glutinous Rice
The fresh Barramundi sits on the glutinous rice with small slices of smoked Muscovy duck within, complemented by the flavorsome belacan-alike chili paste, an interesting combination of different textures and tastes.
Black Forest Gateau
The meal would not be complete without indulging in some sweet dessert. Beautifully replated black forest gateau, it has a chocolaty creamy mousse texture, accompanied by the fine grounded nuts and light whipped cream, it was a wonderful new dessert experience to me.
