For affordable and quality Japanese food, we tried out Sushi Mentai that had been a sensation hit recently among the Chinese community. Itadakimasu.

At Sushi Mentai, Japanese food is no longer a luxury experience reserved just for the privileged. Famous for their affordable sushi that priced at RM1.80 (yellow plate) and RM2.80 (red plate), a wide variety of delicious sushi were served on the conveyor belt for customers to pick from.

I had the Salmon Mentai (RM2.80), and was happy with its flavor, portion and presentation. There were 25 types of sushi from each menu. You can get the Ebi Mentai, Tako Sushi, Unagi or Hotate Mentai for just RM2.80 at Sushi Mentai, and enjoy Kani Mayo, Chuka Idako, Tamago Mentai, Corn Mayo or Edamame for an even cheaper price at RM1.80.

Once a while, if you are lucky, you may find few chef’s specialty items on the conveyor belt, like these delicate Sushi with Crabstick Strips as well as the Beancurd Sushi with Ebi Tempura and Crispy Flakes. Remember to grab it before someone else does as it is very limited!

*****

Chuka Kurage (RM4.80) is a common and popular appetizer in Japanese cuisine, served before the meal to stimulate diner’s desire to eat. Chewy with sourish taste from the sauce, the sesame sprinkled on top did enhance the aroma of this jellyfish dish.

*****

The name Sushi Mentai stems from Mentaiko, a sought-after top fish roe dish lightly flavored with sauce, and a household Japanese dish. Sushi Mentai’s signature dishes are also specially served with an in-house concocted Mentai sauce to bring out the flavors of the inherent ingredients, like this wonderful grilled Salmon Mentaiyaki (RM14.80) that we had.

*****

Beautiful special maki Inari Wrap (RM7.80 for 6 pcs) from Sushi Mentai, the only fusion sushi roll that’s without the vinegar-flavored Japanese rice. Love this refreshing combination, where chef wrapped the sliced crabstick and crunchy cucumber with beancurd then rice skin, and finished it off with drizzled of creamy mayo sauce.

*****

If rice is your staple, diners will be delighted with the choices at Sushi Mentai. We tried the Tori Katsu Curry Rice (RM13.80) that served together with a bowl of warm miso soup. Generous in portion as well as the gravy, diners can choose between chicken, prawn or vegetable only to go with your palatable Japanese curry.

Sushi Mentai also offers Menmono, varieties of classic Japanese noodles served in either hot or cold. We had the simple comfort Wakame Udon (RM8.80) in clear broth, diners can opt for soba too if you are not too fancy for the chewiness of udon noodles.

Since opened for business 4 years back with the 1st outlet in Johor, Sushi Mentai has expanded to many outlets in Malaysia, which located in city areas where it is accessible to the majority, such as Elit Avenue Penang, Sri Petaling Selangor, Pandan Indah Kuala Lumpur, Seremban 2 Negeri Sembilan, Square One Mall Batu Pahat, Taman Sentosa Johor Bahru and so many more. All outlets open daily from 12 noon till 10 pm.

If you access their website through your mobile devices, you can direct link to the map location using the Waze coordinate they provided. I like this function, very easy and convenience!

Tried the one in Seremban 2 before some time back but the sashimi in that outlet isn’t really that fresh. Wonder if I should give them another chance to redeem themselves and try this outlet. LOL
