Thanks for the wonderful invitation, I recently went to Newens Tea House and sampled their ‘A Journey Through Time IX Afternoon Fashion Hi-Tea‘ that’s only available from 20 till 27 November 2015, in conjuction with the Asia’s premier watch and jewellery showcase that will be hosted at Starhill Gallery.
Located between luxury brands Dior and Louis Vuitton inside the Starhill Gallery, Newens Tea House is Kuala Lumpur’s most popular venue for English afternoon tea since December 2014, with the signature 3-tier set that boasts freshly baked scones, cut sandwiches, Newens signature Maids of Honour tarts and a choice of over 60 kinds of tea.
Priced at RM160 nett for 2 pax, the Afternoon Fashion Hi-Tea set comes with Strawberry Dip Chocolate, Couture Handbag Cake, Designer Shoe Cookie and English Trifle (tier 1), Maid of Honour Tarts, Chicken Puff Pastry and Spinach Quiche (tier 2) and Assorted Open Sandwiches (tier 3), as well as a pot of Starhill Jewel tea.
Among the delectable choices, my favorite is the Maids of Honour, where it was first discovered in the 16th century by Tudor King Henry VIII, who was introduced to the delicate pastry-filled tarts at Hampton Court Palace by Anne Boleyn, the second of his six wives.
It is said the King declared the tarts so delicious he ordered the recipe – and the Maid of Honour who baked them – to be locked up and only allowed out to bake for the Royal court. The Maids of Honour recipe remained a secret for 200 years until it was leaked by a palace cook to John Billet, a baker in nearby Richmond.
In 1850 Robert Newens, a former Billets apprentice, opened his own bakery in Richmond, using the original Maids of Honour recipe he learned as a trainee baker.
Since then the Newens family have continued baking Maids of Honour tarts to the same recipe through the generations for customers who have included Britain’s War-time Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, Queen Elicabeth II and more recently X Factor judge Simon Cowell and Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
In February 2015, Newens appointed classically-trained British singer Carly Paoli as the brand’s first ambassador. A month later Newens celebrated another milestone appointing 2 Michelin-starred chef John Burton Race to create the Newens Collection by John Burton Race – an exclusive line of 18 classic English pastries and pies.
