Thanks for the wonderful invitation, I recently went to 1977 Ipoh Chicken Rice and tried out some of their scrumptious a la carte signatures.

Led by the late Mr Yan Khoon Yin in 1976, the humble family operated a shop selling mainly steamed chicken served with bean sprouts and hor fun noodles in Ipoh, Perak. The business since then flourished and the first ‘1977 Ipoh Chicken Rice’ restaurant opened its door to customers in Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya in 1977.


1977 Ipoh Chicken Rice is famous for its authentic and delicious steamed chicken dish, which can be eaten with rice, noodles or porridge. Customers can choose from ordinary White Steamed Chicken (RM28 half pcs ; RM48 whole pcs) or Organic Kampung Chicken (RM38 half pcs ; RM68 whole pcs). The organic kampung chicken is bred in an environment where it can roam freely (free-range) and the skin is much more yellow as the chicken’s staple diet is corn.

“These mouth-watering recipes are closely guarded to ensure the distinctive qualities remain unchanged by time. We aim to nurture good memories by bringing Ipoh’s cultural and food heritage to the world and serving people with Ipoh’s most famous bean sprouts chicken”, said Mr Bryan Yan, the Managing Director of 1977 Ipoh Chicken Rice.


Ipoh Bean Sprouts (RM8 Regular ; RM12 Large)

Ipoh was a well-known tin mining town in the 1930s and water there from the limestone hills generally contains high levels of minerals. That’s why bean sprouts from Buntong, Ipoh are short, fat and famous for its crunchiness.

Just simply blanched the bean sprouts and have it together with their homemade oil and premium soy sauce to enjoy the freshest taste. Bryan also shared with us that they only harvest the second and third layers of bean sprouts from a big container to ensure serving only the best quality for customers to consume.

Stir Fried Bean Sprouts with Salted Fish (RM15)

A simple and normal dish with little creative twist, chef stir fried this bean sprouts dish together with crunchy fried dry cuttlefish, salted fish and enoki mushroom to deliver abundance of wonderful texture and flavors in a mouthful bite. I just love this.


Besides steamed chicken and bean sprouts, you will notice almost every table in the restaurant order their classic signatures Honey BBQ Pork Char Siew (RM12) and Roasted Pork Siew Yuk (RM12). There’s just something so addictively good about these sinful char-grilled porky meats that made everyone crazy about it. Must order!


Be spoilt for their Fish Ball (RM1.80 per pcs) that made of Smooth Wolf Herring fish (ikan parang) for the superb bouncy and light texture.

Made of fresh minced pork and minced dried cuttlefish, I like my Pork Ball (RM1.30 per pcs) meaty and firm in texture.


Buttermilk Fried Fish Fillet (RM18)

Chef fried the dolly fish fillet till golden brown perfection and served it together with fragrant buttermilk gravy that simply irresistible, one plate is definitely not enough to share!


Today, there are five 1977 Ipoh Chicken Rice restaurants located at Jalan Gasing, Sri Petaling, Damansara Jaya, Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall and Mid Valley Megamall. You now don’t have to drive all the way to Ipoh to enjoy these famous authentic delicacies. For a tasty lunch, savory dinner or even a quick tea break to satisfy your food cravings, just head to one of the 1977 Ipoh Chicken Rice outlets that’s nearest to you.

    That looks like a delicious wholesome meal, which is difficult to find these days for hawker food since everything cutting costs. Do they offer takeaway like the usual packet chicken rice?

    I try 1977 Ipoh Chicken before. I love the white chicken as the skin smooth and the meat taste nice. This place is recommend by bf.

    I love Hainanese style steamed white chicken….. those dishes definitely look yummy…….
