Thanks for the wonderful invitation, I recently went to Gobo Upstairs Lounge & Grill for the New Zealand Week which features deliciously set lunch and dinner from 7 till 12 November 2016.

Located at the 6th floor of Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Gobo Upstairs Lounge & Grill has a cosy yet stylish dining atmosphere, where the view of the iconic Petronas Twin Towers and the illumination from the surroundings makes it a stunning masterpiece to behold.

I was truly enjoyed these fine New Zealand wines which exclusively distributed in Malaysia by NEW ZEALAND UNLIMITED.

*****

Priced at RM289 nett, my 6-course wine dinner menu for the New Zealand Week was prepared by NEW ZEALAND UNLIMITED’s Resident Chef Mat Cook, which will be available to public on 10 November 2016.

We kicked start the dinner with Handmade Lite Rye Bread paired with green lipped mussel and miso butter as well as cauliflower almond puree.

From the region of Kapiti Coast, Ohau Woven Stone Pinot Gris 2012 has a summer peaches and ripe apricots with a touch of Turkish delight. A soft palate with gentle acidity, flavors of rock melon and peach and a hint of honey and savory notes.

We had the Cured NZ King Salmon for appetiser, which features avocado buttermilk, cucumber, pomelo and shaved fennel nicely presented for us to feast on.

Ripe hand-picked fruit and barrel fermentation in French Oak has given the wonderfully balanced Wooing Tree Chardonnay 2012 from Central Otago a rich texture and fruit. It shows delightful aromas of peaches and nectarines with citrus and butterscotch on the palate. This wine is best served slightly chilled.

Our entree was this beautifully Roasted Venison served together with red cabbage, turnips, smoked chestnut and cocoa nib jus. I like its tenderness, so juicy I barely need to chew many times.

The Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Viognier combination of Waimea Estate Trev’s Red 2013 from the region of Nelson, it has aromas of violets, black doris plums and a hint of white pepper attributed to the Syrah. Dusty chocolate tannins in the wine coat your mouth and the dark fruit notes seen on the nose are very much perceived on the palate too.

Simply delicious to indulge, Chef Mat Cook paired the Pure South Lamb Loin with confit shoulder, cracked wheat, eggplant, saffron yoghurt, peas and pine nuts. It was definitely an exquisite mains with much satisfaction in texture and balanced flavors!

Tankersley Estate Pinot Noir 2013 was mellowed for 18 months in French oak. It shows the typical Otago characters of cherry, chocolate and spice. It is long, fine and velvery, and whilst great drinking on release, it will develop extra complexity with a few years in the bottle.

We experimented the taste of Kapiti Cheeses with different ingredients such as baguette, rose pear, earl grey tea as well as sweet sourish fig jam.

Wooing Tree Tickled Pink 2012 has attractive aromas of peaches, raspberry and rhubarb crumbled on the nose. Intense flavors of peaches and hints of oranges and toffee apples show on the palate, with great body and lingering finish.

A meal would not be complete without a sweet ending. Our dessert Whittaker’s Chocolate Cremeux was finally served with delectably-crafted coffee sponge, passionfruit melting moment and hokey pokey ice cream.

This Vinoptima Gewurztraminer 2008 from Gisborne shows extraordinary intensity and balance with a spectrum of flavors ranging from tropical fruit through to more subdued nuances of dried figs, vanilla bean and ginger on the palate.

Fine dining in the real sense of the word. Not sure if they would taste just as good without wine pairing.

I’ve been complaining to a lot of chefs that there isn’t enough venison served in KL. Nice to know that you can get that now. First I’ve seen of it in a while.
