*****
Thanks to the warm invitation from Opium KL, I recently had the opportunity to visit this newly launched unique outlet that focuses on Asian Oriental delights with a twist!
Located at the busy street of Changkat Bukit Bintang, Opium KL’s interior was renovated with inspiration from the Opium regimes of the east. Be surrounded by the romance and mystique of the 1930s-1960s oriental east, inside the dimly lit Opium KL was furnished with artifacts such as an opium bed in the Rose Room, opium pipes and huge Chinese wine pots displayed vividly at the Communal area.
*****
Chicken or Beef Satay (RM18)
The signature classic Malaysian’s favorite! Served with grilled chicken or beef, the moist and tender satay skewers were accompanied with fragrant peanut sauce, fresh cucumber, onion and rice cake.
*****
Fern Leaf Salad (RM24)
I’m not really a big fan of wild fern leaves, but this appetizing dish was exceptional! Prepared together with grilled prawns, sambal, ginger flower, shallots, coconut and lime juice, the sourish gravy with hint of spiciness was the wow factor that had me dig into it bite after bite.
*****
Phoenix Dumpling (RM12)
Served steamy hot fresh from the kitchen, these Phoenix Dumplings had a nice bite texture of meaty filling combined of chicken, squid, prawn and little coriander for the extra fragrant in flavor.
*****
Crab Cakes (RM18)
Simple but addictive crispy bite, these crab cakes were made of mashed crab meat and breaded with flavorful crumbs before deep fried it till golden brown perfection. Had it together with the herbed smbal dipping sauce, yummy!
*****
Lemongrass Sticks (RM12)
Diffusing an irresistible herb fragrant, the flavorful paste mixed with chicken, squid, lemongrass and turmeric was placed on the lemongrass stick before deep fried it till crispy perfection.
*****
Opium Wanton Noodles (RM28)
I like how Opium’s creative interpretations of this simple noodle dish! Thin chewy noodles mixed with Opium’s special soya sauce, minced chicken, mushroom and beautifully topped with crispy fried spinach, the succulent shrimp wantons was served along in a fragrant soup.
*****
Cod Fish in Curry Sauce (RM38)
Crafted to suit the contemporary fusion palates, this fish dish really surprised me! The cod fish had a crispy skin, fully coated with fragrant coconut cream sauce that cooked together with curry leaves, which I like how chef played around with the ingredients to blend both the Asian and Western food cultural together.
*****
Wagyu Rendang (RM38)
Tasted as delicious as it sounds, chef prepared this flavorful Wagyu beef dish with classic rendang’s ingredients such as the spices, coconut milk, tumeric leaves and kaffir lime leaves. Love the tenderness for the good choice of quality beef.
*****
Poppy Flat Bread (RM34)
I love the toppings! Slices of savory smoked duck were placed on top the soft and warm flat bread, served together with the appetizing satay sauce and poppy seed generously covered the surface, it was surely an enjoyment filled with local flavor.
*****
Cheesy Banana Fritters (RM18)
Chef added a little twist to this classic simple local snack in his own creative interpretation. Deep fried golden brown crisp banana paired with flavorful aged cheddar and Opium KL’s homemade banana ice cream with creamy texture and real banana bits.
*****
Sago Gula Melaka (RM15)
A local sweet dessert that has been my favorite all the time, filled with sago pearls, gula melaka, coconut milk and jackfruit, it did bring back a lot of my childhood memories.
*****
Opium Ice Glass (RM18)
Indulge your sweet tooth with this colorful medley of flavors that includes shaved ice, grass jelly, water chestnut, basil seeds, peanuts, corn, mung bean paste, coconut milk, gula melaka, coconut ice cream, definitely my favorite, the Opium’s divine version of the local delight ice kacang.

Another highlight that worth coming back to Opium KL was their list of signature house cocktails and twisted classic cocktails. Served in interesting presentation that well-matched the Opium KL’s Asian Oriental theme, the creative bartender mixed in some of the ‘rare’ ingredients to his uniquely designed cocktails, such as Asean Daiquiri (with spice rum, calamansi, kaffir lime leaves and asam boi) and Peking Man (with vodka, puer tea, longan, lime juice, egg white and orange bitters).
Draft Beer served in a pot, a Chinese old-fashioned way
Peking Man (RM32) with vodka, puer tea, longan, lime juice, egg white and orange bitters
Ti Lung Bramble (RM32) with gin, lemon juice, dragon fruit and creme de cassis
