Thanks for the wonderful invitation, I recently went to Pavilion Kuala Lumpur for their 8th anniversary of award-winning Tokyo Street, which celebrated the with Japan Expo Malaysia 2019 (JEMY 2019).
Happening from 26-28 July, the highly-anticipated JEMY 2019 returned for a 3rd consecutive year to Pavilion KL, marking Tokyo Street’s month-long ‘8th Anniversary Japan Festival’ with an energetic gathering of Japan’s iconic culture, music, anime, art, fashion, food, travel and live entertainment in the heart of Bukit Bintang.
Organised by G-Yu Creative and co-organized by Siam Connection Sdn Bhd, JEMY 2019 is the biggest to date, with a line-up of over 75 Japanese artistes include Kousuke Atari, Yudana Senshi & Thames, Kiiyama Shouten, and Sorgenti to name a few, set to exhilarate shoppers with a great mix of Japanese culture, martial arts, cosplay, food, travel, education and entertainment.
Officiated by Mr. Mitsuhiko Sugita, Director of Japan Information Service, Embassy of Japan; Dato’ Joyce Yap, CEO Retail of Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur and Ms. Yupharet Eakturapakal, President of G-Yu Creative Co., Ltd, the grand launch ceremony was attended by partners, members of the Japanese community, celebrity guests and the media.
We were treated to artiste performances and DJ Hello Kitty made a surprise appearance before the cake-cutting ceremony to commemorate Tokyo Street’s 8th Birthday.
Pavilion KL presented 8 CASIO watches in a surprise birthday draw to delight media and guests. The event ended with a grand tour of the experiential booths that JEMY 2019 had to offer.
“There is much talk about online shopping and e-commerce taking over malls. However, events like this cannot be replicated online. Japan Expo Malaysia and Tokyo Street’s 8th anniversary is proof that Pavilion KL remains evergreen because highly engaging experiences can only be created here in the mall. While not all of us can hop on a plane to Japan whenever we like, we can nevertheless experience Tokyo and Japan, right here in Pavilion KL,” said Dato’ Joyce Yap, CEO Retail of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.
As part of Tokyo Street’s 8th birthday celebration, shoppers spotted wearing Japanese-inspired outfits or Yukatas in Pavilion KL were rewarded with Kimono Goodie Bags and a chance to win CASIO watches.
JEMY 2019 also saw the debut of Japan’s largest female idol group, AKB48 (Akihibara 48) in Malaysia. The epitome of ‘kawaii’, AKB48 performed live for the 1st time ever in Malaysia. Well-known for its super cute outfits, amazing chorography and vocals, fans were jumping, singing and dancing in so much of excitement.
Thanks to the sponsors that include Maybank, official bank partner, CASIO, Pavilion Hotel Kuala Lumpur and Lavender, an estimated 180,000 fans visited Pavilion KL throughout the 3-day festivities.
