I’ll be honest, when I first heard “progressive dining experience,” I did not know what to expect and pictured awkward transitions between courses.
What I did not picture was moving through four completely different atmospheres, flavors, and vibes across a single evening on the Johor coastline. But that’s exactly what The Westin Desaru Coast Resort has cooked up with their brand new “Flavors in Motion Dining Adventure”, launching May 2026.
Here’s how the evening unfolds: We start at the Beach Bar – golden hour, waves rolling in, a refreshing sea-inspired starter, Bluefin Tune Crude with coconut vinegar and lime, in hand. It’s the kind of opening that immediately signals the night is going to be different.
As the sky dims, the journey moves to Kedidi, the resort’s coastal venue perched above Muara Lagoon, where locally sourced seafood and Nusantara flavors do the heavy lifting. Think warmth, texture, and that grounded, rooted kind of cooking that makes you feel connected to a place.
Guests can choose between Charcoal Grilled Freshwater Prawns with sambas hijab beurre blanc, sea grapes, and micro ulam, or the Smoked Duck Breast with torch ginger relish, young pineapple, and asam jawa jus.
Then comes Seasonal Tastes – a sharper, more contemporary energy, with fire-kissed techniques transforming humble ingredients into something genuinely exciting. I had the Australian Grain Fed Angus Beef with rendang glaze, grilled sweet potato, and smoked aubergine puree, while my parents indulged in the Petuna Ocean Trout with green curry emulsion, pickled cucumber pomme anna, and caviar.
And just when you think the evening has peaked, we land at Prego for an Italian-inspired finale built entirely around indulgent desserts, the Valrhona Chocolate Sphere Tiramisu with salted palm caramel. It’s a full narrative arc. A story told through food.
The experience runs daily from 6PM to 10PM, priced at MYR288 nett per person – which, considering you’re moving through four venues with curated dishes at each, feels like strong value for a resort dining experience of this calibre.
Alongside this, The Westin Desaru Coast Resort is also launching “Behind the Bar Cocktail Classes”, a hands-on deep dive into the craft of cocktail-making that’s perfect for a fun activity to break up beach days.
Guided by the resort’s own bartending team, the class is a proper hands-on session in tropical mixology. We’re not watching a demo from a distance. We’re learning techniques and building cocktails from scratch. There’s something unexpectedly satisfying about the shake of a cocktail tin and placing that final garnish ourselves. It turns a drink into something we’re genuinely proud of.
Whether enjoyed as an afternoon activity with friends, a couple’s experience by the coast, or a leisurely addition to a weekend escape, the session offers a refreshing blend of learning, relaxation, and social connection.
Available daily from 3 PM to 4 PM from May 2026 onwards, the experience is priced at MYR88 nett per person, inclusive of light snacks.
