Thanks to the wonderful invitation, I recently attended the press conference of SOULed OUT’s 20th anniversary celebration with the Asean Jazz and Percussion Festival.

I still remember 19 years ago, SOULed OUT was a small neighbourhood cafe opened its doors in an insignificant shop lot in Mont Kiara armed with only 4 staffs.

Five years later, slowly but surely it had won many a heart with its’ easy and familiar personality, SOULed OUT moved to a bigger premise in Desa Sri Hartamas. Today, she has served over 5 million patrons and has matured into an assured personality with a fun loving spirit. This icon in the F&B industry is about to turn 20 and she will do so in style!

To kick start the year-long festivities, SOULed OUT will be hosting the Asean Jazz and Percussion Festival this coming 19th and 20th September. Working in collaboration with the Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival under the directorship of Malaysian music icon, Michael Veerapen, the Asean Jazz and Percussion Festival is slated to draw a crowd of thousands. Music lovers are assured of international concert standard performances from renowned musicians from the Asean region.

“I am extremely blessed. To celebrate SOULed OUT’s 20th birthday soon is certainly very special. This place is like my own child which I have nurtured over the years. I am lucky to have such loyal patrons who call it their second home, and a team that is dedicated and passionate about the business day in day out.” says Fred Choo, owner and founder, wistfully.

Koh Mr Saxman and The Sound of Siam from Thailand, which will take the audience to a land of musical creativity where jazz and Thai culture interact in brilliant spirits.

On the 19th September, it’s gonna be smooth jazz all the way. From 5 p.m., expect to groove to a line-up that includes Koh Mr Saxman & The Sound of Siam, The Steve McQueens, WVC Trio + 1 and Steve Nanda Group featuring Dasha Logan.

Dasha Logan is a Malaysian-born singer who has been singing professionally for the past four years, and was the first Malaysian singer to top the UK Soul Chart in December 2014 with her first single Cleverly.

If percussions are more your thing, come round on the 20th September and marvel at acts such as Afro Asia featuring Steve Thornton & Special Guests, No Noise Percussion, Groove’N Roll and Akasha.

Steve Thornton is a world-renowned percussionist and has worked alongside some of the most talented vocalists including Tracy Chapman, Mariah Carey and the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson.

To complement the fine music, SOULed OUT will be turning out all the stops with a carnival like atmosphere with loads of bites and drinks. Be on the lookout for caddy boys who will be weaving in and out of the crowd with SO Lip Smacking treats. Feeling thirsty? Head for the mobile bars set up at strategic locations who will be serving up ice cold mojitos and more.

As a finale to the festival, it is a SOULed OUT tradition to end things with a bang and what louder bang is there than a spectacular fireworks show!

Influenced by Malaysian and other Asian cultures, the music of WVC TRiO +1 cuts across many musical genres and defies any kind of classification.
