Amongst the ever-increasing number of food outlets in Damansara Utama lies this vintage interior designed cafe called Kaffa Espresso Bar. Kaffa can be easily spotted with its hung horizontal blinds at outside the premises that featured caricatures of James Dean, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe.
Showcasing items between the eras of 50’s till the 70’s, Kaffa has this American vintage concept for its interior layout. Old radios, artworks and even its retro furniture all add up to a cosy and rustic feel. Dr. Darren Ng, who is the owner of Kaffa Espresso Bar and also a big fan of design, said his idea of having the vintage feel is to give customers a comfortable ambiance to dine as well as spending time to chit chat with friends.
When asked why the name ‘Kaffa’, Darren explained the word itself comes from a place in Ethiopia which is the original home of coffee. He picked the name as it is easy to remember and meaningful for people to associate his outlet with coffee. Darren specifically chose ‘Espresso Bar’ because its minimal lit environment gives customers a feeling that they are in a bar rather than a cafe.
Kaffa Espresso Bar uses Merdeka coffee beans which is a type of Arabica variant beans that sourced from Indonesia for all its coffee drinks.
Although the Kaffa Espresso Bar is just over four months old, Darren already plans for Kaffa’s future expansion. In fact, a flagship store in Georgetown Penang will be opening soon. With its pleasing vintage ambiance, great coffee and food, Kaffa Espresso Bar is definitely a great place to hang out.
Cafe Freddo (RM12)
Cafe Freddo has a nice creamy and soothing flavour and it is commonly seen at any Italian coffee bars. There are many variants in preparing it; ice-creams, ice cubes, ice blended but Kaffa Espresso Bar makes this drink by shaking the coffee in a container full of ice cubes. “This is the most original way of doing it.”, said Darren.
Caffe Latte (RM10)
Kaffa’s Caffe Latte has a nice milky based flavour in it. Darren himself prefers beverage that is bit milkier which appeals to more casual coffee drinkers that do not like the bitter dark roasted coffee taste.
Salted Caramel Macchiato (RM12.50)
Being another best seller at Kaffa Espresso Bar, barista drizzled the Salted Caramel Macchiato with caramel sauce over the top of a foam milk with a tinge of fine sea salt flakes, it was easy to drink without the overly strong taste of espresso.
BBQ Beef Ribs (RM29.90)
To my surprise, Kaffa Espresso Bar also serves great food for their customers. Chef Marcus Lim who is an ex-sous chef from San Francisco Steakhouse helms the kitchen whipping up delicious fusion western style food.
Must-try signature dishes includes this marvelous BBQ Beef Ribs. Featuring tender and juicy rack of beef ribs and topped with sweet BBQ sauce, this is definitely one hearty meal for all carnivore lovers!
Spicy Aglio Olio with Turkey Ham and Seaweed (RM20.90)
Next to whet our appetites was this fusion style Spicy Aglio Olio with Turkey Ham and Seaweed. It was Chef Marcus own creation, that the light salted buttery taste seaweed actually compliments the spaghetti very well. Satisfying!
Breakfast Platter (RM18.90)
For those looking for a hearty platter, this Breakfast Platter would probably suit the bill nicely. With generous serving portion that includes three scramble eggs, a kraftkorn bread, a choice of turkey ham or beef bacon, a jumbo sausage, golden hash brown, sautéed mushrooms and grilled tomato, this all-day long meal is the perfect way to start off the day.
