Marriott Bonvoy is delighted to announce the launch of its “Locally-Inspired Eco-Cocktails of Malaysia” initiative, a celebration of sustainability and local flavors. This initiative is part of the first-ever Sustainable Bartender Championship held by Marriott Bonvoy hotels and resorts across Asia Pacific Excluding China, which invites bartenders to submit creative cocktail creation entries centered around sustainability, local produce, and consumer engagement.
In collaboration with Pernod Ricard and KI NO BI Kyoto Dry Gin, the competition in Malaysia will run until 31 July 2024 and culminate in the Grand Finale in Singapore in October 2024, where the winner will be crowned Marriott International’s APEC Most Sustainable Bartender 2024.
By hosting this competition, Marriott Bonvoy aims to encourage sustainable practices within the bartending community and reinforce new ways of thinking about the ingredients used in bartending. The initiative is also in line with Marriott’s ESG values as outlined by Marriott International’s sustainability and social impact platform, Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction.
The move towards sustainability is also in line with consumer demand. A recent report into preferences of affluent travelers in Asia Pacific And China published by The Luxury Group by Marriott International, identified a growing trend of eco-conscious travelers, who are mindful of limiting food waste and supporting the local community. 43% want to see hotel restaurants offering locally sourced food products and a further 35% expect to see effective management of food waste.
“Marriott Bonvoy’s locally inspired eco-cocktails are more than just drinks; they are a testament to our commitment to sustainability and creativity,” said Masri, Senior Area Director of Operations, Indonesia & Malaysia, Marriott International. “We are proud to offer our guests unique experiences that not only delight the palate but also support a healthier planet. Each cocktail tells a story of innovation, local flavor, and environmental responsibility.”

Some of the notable cocktails include ValaPalam by W Kuala Lumpur (available at Wet Deck) made with the alluring combination of Bumbu The Original rum, homemade banana liqueur (made with Pisang Berangan, Absolut Vodka, and sugar), Baileys Irish Cream and chocolate bitters. Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu invites guests to indulge in experiencing a destination-inspired cocktail with Kopi Semalam (available at Rooftop@LeMeridien), featuring Sabah’s very own century-old Robusta coffee history from Tenom infused with a world-renowned 13-year-old Chivas Regal whisky.
