Thanks for the wonderful invitation, I recently went to Renaissance Johor Bahru Hotel for the “Global Day of Discovery” event.

Rooted in discovery and the spirit of the neighborhood, Renaissance Hotels – part of Marriott Bonvoy’s extraordinary portfolio of 31 hotel brands – celebrated its annual “Global Day of Discovery” on May 18, 2023. A day when all 170+ Renaissance properties around the world, together as a collective drumbeat, put on elevated experiences – underscoring how the brand delivers unexpected discoveries beyond the convention of travel.

To celebrate Global Day of Discovery’s 9th anniversary, Renaissance Hotels is featuring unscripted adventures that place the brand’s revamped Evenings at Renaissance program in the spotlight. With the hotel and travel industry back in full swing, guests traveling both for business and leisure are looking for authentic local experiences.

On May 18, 2023, guests and locals visiting Renaissance Johor Bahru Hotel can join in the celebration with Discover Johor’s Cultural Heritage. We enjoyed the immersive experience of the local culture curated through a series of activities, designed to ignite the senses.

In partnership with Yayasan Warisan Johor (Johor Heritage Foundation), the tour kicked off with the removal of footwear – a typically Malay custom before entering a home – to step into “Rumah Limas”, a Malay-style wooden gazebo where travelers are traditionally welcomed and entertained while seated on its wooden floors. At “Rumah Limas”, we dressed up in Johor Malay traditional costumes and pose for photographs at Instagram-worthy spots like the open windows and charming verandah of the house.

Next, we visited the Galeri Tenun Johor, where skilled workers demonstrate the art of spinning threads into spools while another is weaving the fabric, thread-by-thread on a wooden traditional weaving frame.

Next, at Johor Art Gallery, travelers will be ushered to the event area where they can observe craftsmen and craftswomen skilled in the art of traditional kite-making and batik-painting as well as the assembling and playing of the “angklung”, a traditional musical instrument made from bamboo. The travelers who have completed painting their pieces of batik can happily take them home as special souvenirs.

At Zapin House, s group of dancers will perform the Zapin, a lively Johor traditional folk dance. At the end of their performance, the dancers step forward to invite travelers to follow their lead in learning the basic steps and dance along with them. The tour ends with light refreshments served with a hot beverage like Teh Tarik or traditional pulled-milk tea. The refreshment menu has a mix of sweet and savory indigenous items like stir-fried noodles, curry-puffs and popular local pastries or cakes.

Upon returning to the hotel, we were entertained by Drum Up JB, an explosion performance of creative energy and cultural diversity of Johor Bahru before experiencing Evenings At Renaissance, afternoon tea with the local twist that specially curated by hotel’s culinary team to conclude the 9th Global Day of Discovery.
